Idioms for Daily Conversation (Sound Like a Native!)
Để giao tiếp hay và tự nhiên hơn, bạn cần nắm được những thành ngữ (idioms) phổ biến thường được sử dụng trong các cuộc hội thoại hàng ngày.
Chúng mình cùng học 15 thành ngữ thông dụng, và rất nhiều ví dụ của chúng nhé.

1. Hit the books: Study hard (học hành chăm chỉ)
I’m hitting the books for my exam!
I can’t go out tonight; I need to hit the books for my final exam.
She hit the books all weekend and aced her test! (aced (v) did very well)
2. Break the ice: Start a conversation (phá vỡ sự ngượng ngùng/im lặng, bắt đầu cuộc trò chuyện)
Jokes help break the ice.
He told a funny story to break the ice at the meeting.
Playing a game is a great way to break the ice with new classmates.
3. Burn the midnight oil: Work late (làm việc khuya, thức đêm để hoàn thành công việc)
She’s burning the midnight oil to finish the project.
The team burned the midnight oil to finish the project on time.
If you keep burning the midnight oil, you’ll be exhausted!
4. Spill the tea: Share gossip (tám chuyện, tiết lộ tin đồn)
Come on, spill the tea!
Okay, spill the tea - what really happened at the party?
She loves to spill the tea about celebrity drama.
5. On the same page: Agree (đồng ý, hiểu cùng một vấn đề)
Let’s get everyone on the same page.
Before we start, let’s make sure everyone’s on the same page.
After the discussion, we were finally on the same page about the plan.
6. Pull someone's leg: Joke/trick someone (đùa, giỡn, trêu chọc ai đó)
Don't worry, I'm just pulling your leg - you didn't really fail!
He said he met a celebrity, but he was pulling my leg.
I told her I was moving to Mars - just pulling her leg!
7. Cost an arm and a leg: Very expensive (rất đắt/mắc tiền)
This designer bag cost an arm and a leg!
Fixing the car cost us an arm and a leg last month.
Private healthcare can cost an arm and a leg in some countries.
8. Hit the nail on the head: Be exactly right (nói chính xác, đúng trọng tâm)
You hit the nail on the head - that’s the real problem.
Her analysis hit the nail on the head.
When you said we needed better communication, you hit the nail on the head.
9. Let the cat out of the bag: Reveal a secret (lỡ tiết lộ bí mật)
He let the cat out of the bag about the surprise party.
Oops - I didn’t mean to let the cat out of the bag!
The kids let the cat out of the bag about their mom's birthday gift.
10. Under the weather: Feel sick (cảm thấy mệt mỏi, không khỏe)
I’m feeling under the weather today - maybe a cold.
She stayed home because she was under the weather.
Our manager is under the weather today, so the meeting is postponed.
11. Bite the bullet: Endure something painful/difficult (chấp nhận làm điều khó khăn/đau đớn)
I had to bite the bullet and take the boring job.
Just bite the bullet and tell her the truth.
I hate needles, but I bit the bullet and got vaccinated.
12. Throw in the towel: Give up (bỏ cuộc)
After failing twice, he almost threw in the towel.
Don’t throw in the towel yet - keep trying!
After years of failed startups, he finally threw in the towel.
13. Jump on the bandwagon: Join a popular trend (theo trào lưu, xu hướng)
Everyone’s buying those shoes - now I’m jumping on the bandwagon!
Politicians often jump on the bandwagon during elections.
Now that electric cars are trendy, everyone's jumping on the bandwagon.
14. Go the extra mile: Do more than expected (cố gắng hơn mức cần thiết)
She went the extra mile to help me with my project.
Customers love when businesses go the extra mile.
The teacher went the extra mile by tutoring students after class.
15. Get cold feet: Become too nervous to act (mất bình tĩnh, lo lắng trước khi làm điều gì đó)
He got cold feet and canceled the wedding.
Don’t get cold feet - you’ll do great in the interview!
The actor got cold feet right before his Broadway debut.
CTE chỉ mẹo cho bạn: Bạn đã đọc hết ví dụ chưa? Hãy đảm bảo rằng chúng mình không bỏ qua bất cứ ví dụ nào nhé. Vì việc đọc nhiều câu ví dụ đúng và hay, sẽ giúp người học nhận ra được quy luật sử dụng từ vựng một cách tự nhiên và chuẩn xác đó. (Trong câu ví dụ, có một số từ “ĐẶC BIỆT” được gạch chân. Thấy hông - thấy hông 😉)
Để cuộc hội thoại tự nhiên hơn, chúng mình chỉ nên sử dụng 1 vài câu thành ngữ thôi nhé, xài lố quá sẽ mất hay! Ví dụ áp dụng:
Alex: [sighs/thở dài] I think I need to bite the bullet and ask for a raise tomorrow. I’ve been putting it off for months.
Jamie: You totally should! You always go the extra mile - like staying late to fix the client’s issue last week.
Alex: I know, but what if they say no?
Jamie: Then at least you tried. And if they seem surprised, remind them how much you’ve contributed.
